Senior Instructor Profiles

IAACT faculty members include Instructors and Practicum Facilitators.

Faculty development is a progressive process in which candidates begin as ACT I and ACT II Practicum Facilitators. Practicum Facilitators are qualified to conduct practica for their respective level of training. ACT I instructors are qualified to teach ACT I intensive seminars as well as ACT I practica; and ACT II instructors are qualified to teach ACT I, ACT II, and ACT III:Certification intensive seminars as well as ACT I and II practica.

Participants who have completed ACT III:Certification may wish to become faculty members. Barnes Boffey

Barnes Boffey

Barnes Boffey is a Senior Faculty Member of IAACT and has been a counselor and consultant in private practice for 25 years. His presentations are warm, humorous and challenging. He has worked in the fields of addictions, education, counseling and camping, and his special interest lies in creating healthy relationships at home and in the workplace. Barnes is currently the Director of Training for the Aloha Foundation and the Director of Camp Lanakila in Fairlee, VT. He has taught at Dartmouth College and the University of Cincinnati and has been an international speaker in Canada, Europe, Australia and the US.

Barnes is the author of Reinventing Yourself: A Control Theory Approach to Becoming the Person You Want to Be and My Gift in Return: Thoughts Along the Journey to Becoming Real, as well as many articles on the application of Perceptual Control Theory to building community. Shelley Brierley Von Zill

Shelley Brierley

A founding Instructor of IAACT, Shelley is the originator of The Circle of Strength and is currently working on a book by the same title. Having worked in the human relations field with couples, families, individuals, teams and organisations for over 25 years, her presentations provide a powerful perspective from which to view relationships and facilitation. To Shelley, everything is about “relationships”!

In her private practice and workshops alike, participants perceive Shelley to be compassionate, capable, insightful, gentle and creative. Her focus on “Systems Thinking” and “Personal Responsibility” provides a platform from which people can grow, personally and professionally. Her experience is demonstrated in a variety of capacities: as a therapist and counselor, instructor, facilitator, coach, keynote speaker, and consultant to organizations, teams, counselors, education, business, rehabilitation, and administration.

Over the years Shelley has presented in Canada, the United States of America, Australia, Indonesia and Ireland. She has her M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology, is a registered Canadian Clinical Counselor, a Registered British Columbia Clinical Counselor, is a Certified Life Skills Coach and was a Senior Instructor with the International Reality Therapy Association for over 15 years. Shelley currently resides in the White Rock / Langley area of beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

Pamela Fox

Pamela Fox

Pamela has worked extensively with at-risk students using the ideas of Control Theory. Her book, Teaching Control in the High School Classroom contains many suggestions as well as examples of student work. She has also done counselling sponsored by the Duke Hospital Veterans Administration with veterans dealing with issues of post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Pamela currently lives in Mexico where she owns and runs a hotel on the Pacific coast using the ideas of PCT to maintain a business and provide educational and business opportunities for employees.

Perry is the president of New View Publications, http://www.newviewwublications.com, and is a noted counselor, trainer, and author. Her dynamic seminars are acclaimed by professionals internationally. She has authored several books including: In Pursuit of Happiness, Helping Kids Help Themselves, and Overall Direction. She is a well-known keynote speaker, having presented in Croatia, Slovenia, Australia, Canada, and USA. Perry's presentations are humorous and practical, offering new ways to think about behavior, situations and your interactions. She lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with her husband, Fred.





Jeff Grumley

Jeff Grumley

Jeff Grumley is an author, trainer, and counselor living in Rockford, IL. Jeff works with at-risk students in the Rockford Public Schools and in the Grumley Group, a mental health clinic serving northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. In school districts as diverse as Iceland, India, Australia, Indonesia, Canada, and the United States, the ideas of A Connected School, which Jeff co-authored, guides teachers and parents to help their children be achieving, caring, and safe. Judy McFadden

Judy McFadden

Judy McFadden is a registered psychologist and has worked as a teacher and counselor in Australian schools for 25 years, always interested in helping people find effective ways of getting their lives in balance. She has been writing and teaching about Control Theory since 1980 and is currently Chairperson for AACTA, the Australian branch of IAACT.

Judy is the author of four books on effective behavior: one for parents, The Simple Way to Raise a Good Kid, two for teachers, Junior Lifescience and Lifescience - Making Your Life a Success, and one for yo-yo dieters, Diet No More!, which introduces the Nectar program. The Lifescience books are now out of print, but Judy hopes to revise and republish them.

Judy recently worked with her daughter, Jenny McFadden, to teach the first ACT I featuring Nectar strategies to Nutritionists and Life Coaches.

By constantly thinking about what she can control and what she can't, at many levels, Judy has found ways to achieve balance even when life is not going as planned!



Shelley Roy

Shelley Roy is an energetic, fun-loving speaker, trainer, and facilitator. Her understanding of adult learning, change, and human behavior makes her an exceptional presenter. Her sense of humor and love for helping people help themselves is evident throughout her work.

A recognized leader in human resource development, Shelley has worked with thousands of adults in a wide range of learning situations. For over 10 years, Shelley provided ongoing facilitation to over 70 improvement teams. She has consulted on a regional, state, national, and international basis on Leadership, Human Behavior, Change and Transition, Effective Communication, Models of Teaching, Interagency Collaboration, Effective Schools Research, Generational Diversity and other areas related to change and building productive teams. Much of her experience has included working with multi-cultural communities. Shelley has taught both in the K-12 system and at the University level, in West Berlin, Germany, on the Navajo Reservation, New Mexico, in Junction City, KS, St. Cloud MN, and Leigh, NE. Her experiences have been in the areas of Health, Human Services, Education and Business. She is one of the co-authors of A Connected School, available through New View Publications. Patti Sebestyen

Patti Sebestyen

Patti Sebestyen is a founding member of IAACT. She has worked with "high risk" youth for the past 30 years. Her students were the ones no one else would have in their buildings. Many have chosen to make major life changes and become functional, contributing members of society, thus becoming the person they really want to be. Working with the addictions world has provided an opportunity to do many community and group presentations, primarily around "crystal meth." Currently, Patti is working as a Consultant with the Northern Lights School Division in Northern Saskatchewan. This school division primarily serves First Nations Youth and their families.

Patti has received the highest Canadian Award for the teaching profession -- the Prime Minister's Teaching Award of Excellence. She is also an Inductee to the Saskatoon Sports Hall Of Fame.

Glenn Smith

Glenn Smith

Glenn started his career in 1973 when he founded and directed the first community-based group home for youth ever established in West Virginia. This treatment center for adolescents used a little known model of management, at that time called Reality Therapy. After conducting his graduate studies in Adolescent Development at Cornell University in 1980, Glenn studied with the Institute for Reality Therapy under Dr. William Glasser and in 1987 became a faculty member.

Since that time, Glenn, with the use of Reality Therapy and its theoretical base, Perceptual Control Theory (PCT), has helped other organizations to develop programs that promote responsible decision-making. Through the 1990s Glenn continued his career in North Carolina where he has consulted with hundreds of schools and organizations in the application of PCT. In 1997, Glenn helped organize and develop and The International Association of Applied Control Theory (IAACT) in which he also serves as a Senior Faculty Member.

Glenn is a gifted counselor, life coach and strategist. He is a skilled mediator, trainer, and consultant who has provided coaching to counselors, educators, businesses, and organizations throughout the United States and Canada. He is the founder of Life Connections, Inc., a private counseling and professional coaching organization near Charlotte, NC. He presently coordinates and teaches a Life Skills curriculum to inmates under the Mecklenburg County, NC, Sheriff’s Department. Glenn has been a foster parent for special-needs children and has written two books: Quality Times for Quality Kids and Schools With Character. Glenn lives in the Charlotte area with his wife Kelli and his teenage children, Karlie and Taylor.



Lynn Taylor

Lynn Taylor

A long-time northerner of 34 years, Lynn Taylor has lived in all three of Canada's territories in the cities of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories; Rankin Inlet, Nunavut; and Whitehorse, Yukon. Lynn worked as a public and school librarian for 18 years and is a human development program instructor. As an A Connected School trainer, she has been working with these ideas in schools and with families for nine years. Currently, Lynn works for Yellowknife Education District No. 1 as Coordinator of the Restitution Peace Project. This five-year initiative to create achieving, caring, and safe schools in NWT and Nunavut communities is funded by Canada's National Crime Prevention Centre and community partners. Lynn resides in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with her family of four.
